Give support to the biggest fish in the ocean
Australia’s Coral Coast is one of five tourism regions withing Western Australia and it stretches from Cervantes in the south to Exmouth in the north. It is approximately 1170km of coastline.
The Coral Coast is is home to Australia’s largest fringing reef, the Ningaloo Reef which is made up of more than 260km of coast. The Ningaloo Reef is home to 500+ species of tropical fish and 220+ species of coral.
The worlds largest fish, the Whaleshark, grows up to 18m long, makes the Ningaloo Reef its home from March – July every year. Ningaloo is one of the few regions in the world where the whaleshark regularly visits and is easily accessible to observers.
Seems like there are plenty of reasons to visit but as the whalesharks are now ‘just’ arriving into our waters, how about coming sooner than later.

Always being asked for the best snorkeling spots for families. Here are some of my favourites.
- Lakeside – from the Milyering Visitor Centre drive past towards the water and veer left. Park at the beach and walk left around the point to get to some of the best ‘from the beach’ snorkeling on the Ningaloo Reef.
- Oyster Stacks – check the tide charts and make sure dont try this one at low tide, there will be nothing to see. But at high tide it is teaming with marine life.
- Sandy Bay – if you have small children and want them to get some practice in first, then this is a perfect choice. A good 45 min drive from Exmouth, on the west side, but worth the drive. Shallow turquoise water, with fish swimming in the lagoon.
- Turquoise Bay – an all time favourite and for stronger swimmers, the Drift is a must. Let the waters carry you over the reef, with little or no effort. Or if you are not that brave, then snorkel from the safety of the beach and see lots of large fish and marine life.
- Bundegi Beach – closer to home, at the tip of the North West Cape, good for practicing your snorkeling. Reef interesting at low tide and lots of marine life.
Remember to check your tide charts!

All our holiday homes in Exmouth are subject to minimum night stays. Each owner decides what they feel is appropriate to their home and their requirements. None of our homes have minimum night stay requirements of under 3 nights.
Homes accepting 3 nights or more – Coral, Turtle and Marlin
Homes accepting 4 nights or more – Amberjack, Frangipani, Driftwood, Oyster, Jurabi, Tusk.
Homes accepting 5 nights or more – Mandu Villa
Homes accepting 7 nights or more – Cobia and Seabird.
Please note that on the cheaper homes there is a loading for shorter night stays to cover the costs of the cleaning of the home (which is the same cost regardless of whether you stay 14 nights or 3 nights.) Remember these are houses the same size as a full home, they are not hotel rooms, so they take time to clean in between guests, hence the additional costs.
We cannot accept one or two night bookings due to the low tariffs we charge and the high costs to maintain a home.

There is very exciting news this week for the Exmouth Game Fishing Club.
The annual Gamex tournament at Exmouth will this coming March 2012 be part of the International Game Fishing Association (IGFA) Great Marlin Race. The Great Marlin Race is a partnership between IGFA and the USA’s Stanford University that pairs recreational anglers with cutting-edge science to learn more about the basic biology of marlin and how they utilise the open ocean habitat. The goal of the program is to deploy 50 pop-up archival tags (PAT) in marlin at billfish tournaments around the world each year, and a limited number of these tags will be available to Gamex anglers, with the tournament running from March 9-17. Gamex and Exmouth is the ONLY Australian Tournament and location that has been chosen for 2012. (We feel very privileged!!) This effort will increase understanding of distribution, population structure and biology of marlin and engage anglers and the general public in the research process.
By increasing the understanding of where these animals go and how they use the pelagic ecosystem, it will provide valuable information to the resource managers and policy makers responsible for ensuring their long-term conservation. One hundred and twenty days after each tag is deployed, it automatically releases itself from the fish and transmits information such as the fish’s path, depth profiles, and sea temperatures to earth-orbiting ARGOS satellites. Tag sponsors, anglers and the general public will be able to view the migration routes of tagged marlin through Google Earth-enabled maps on the Great Marlin Race website where pop-up tag locations and animal tracks are displayed.
The subsidised cost of each tag is $4000. The marlin, and sponsor, whose tag travels the farthest of all 50 tags will be recognised at the annual IGFA International Auction and Banquet in January 2013, while the angler who tags the winning fish in the Exmouth leg of the 2011/12 Great Marlin Race will receive a free five-year membership to EGFC and free entry to Gamex 2013.
The Exmouth Game Fishing Club believes it is fantastic opportunity to place Exmouth firmly on the international game fishing map and to support scientific research and marlin conservation. To sponsor a tag email Exmouth Game Fishing Club at secretary@egfc.com.au, with tags sold on a first come, first served basis. For more information visit go to http://igmr.igfa.org .

Recently I had a very exhaustive conversation with a guest who was trying to get a big picture of the dive scene in Exmouth and the Ningaloo Reef. Where to Dive, the best sites, could he dive from the beach? All relevant questions, but as I could only give a rough guide I have since done some more research.
I found a very good dive site link which I think will give the diver a better overall view of what is on offer on the Reef. www.divezone.net/ningaloo-reef/travel.htm
Although they didn’t mention the prevelance of Holiday Home Accommodation when discussing places to stay in Exmouth, I will forgive them for that one for now.
My biggest tip is to ring (dont just rely on the websites) the dive companies and talk with the dive crew. Shop around, they all offer a similar product. Look at reviews.
Remember, you can hire all the dive and snorkeling gear you like in town and you can get amazing dive and snorkeling experiences straight from the beaches.

Have been getting some rave reviews from guests lately who have been diving with the Whalesharks on the Ningaloo Reef.
Three Island Marine Charters www.whalesharkdive.com have been commented on as the most helpful, especially for novice swimmers or those who are a bit nervy getting into the water.
Ningaloo Whaleshark and Dive www.ningaloowhalesharkndive have also had some amazing reviews commenting on their professional organisation and ease of booking with the crew on the boats as apparently some of the ‘cutest’ around!
Ningaloo Blue always are consistently good operators and I am sure all the other dive companies are just as good, but all the talk from my guests is on the two mentioned at the moment.
Looks like there is only about another week of whaleshark dives to be had, but apparently the humpbacks are in abundance on the west side of the Cape, so still plenty to see.

Steve, Scott and Brett are three mates who have come up from Mandurah for a couple of weeks fishing. The trio have been out catching a variety of species including yellowfin tuna, dolphin fish, northern blue tuna and a
honker long nose emperor. A photo would have been good, but apparently Steve was unable to work the camera when asked to take the photo…? The boys have given Steve a lot of grief, but they are having loads of fun. Surprisingly others staying at the caravan park have commented on there being ‘no fish about’ this week, but the boys are certainly on the right spots! They hope to catch a billfish and some GT’s on their trip as well.
The crabs have continued to show up in the gulf and despite many tourists being here over the Easter break, there still seems to be many blue manners about. One customer was even throwing nets from the beach and getting
plenty for a fresh feed. Others have been scooping them in the shallows, while a few people have reported muddies as well in the mangroves. Quite a few locals are quite sick of eating crabs! They are best eaten fresh and
don’t freeze well, so it’s good to see many people taking enough for a fresh feed only.
The monthly fishing competition was a little quiet in April for pictures, but we did manage to get this cracking shot of Nerida Baker with a whopping 12kg red emperor. Nerida was fishing with some friends in Coral Bay over
the Easter holidays. Using mulie for bait she caught this awesome red. Other entrants this last month included Kimberley Jongeling with an amazing 10kg golden trevally, however, the winner was Kye Venrooy with his
spectacular spangled emperor from the marina.
All pics can be viewed in store and all entrants go in to the draw for $700 worth of fishing gear at the end of the year. Kye wins a gift voucher in store, while other monies raised goes to Exmouth Volunteer Marine Rescue and the Exmouth Game Fishing Club.

You only have a few more days to access the cheap airfares to Exmouth. The special deals finish March 30th, but they may extend that special offer time frame.
Tickets are $129 each way. For flights between 4th May – 22nd June, and 26th July – 14th September.
All other flights are either $149 or $179 each way on the current introductory cheaper flights. So book now.
We are very grateful for the second airline, it really opens up the availability of flights into Exmouth and gives our guests more opportunity to enjoy the wonders of the Ningaloo Reef.
