If you are coming to Exmouth during the Whaleshark season, April – September every year, you would be wise to think about your bookings now.
This is a spectacular event, and every year guests book accommodation with us, sometimes 10 months in advance, just to have the opportunity to swim with these gentle giants of the oceans.
However they fail to book their dives until they actually arrive into town, or only weeks prior. May I suggest that you plan your swim and dive as soon as you can. Do the research with the Whaleshark operators and get the best price and product for your needs.
There are no ‘duds’ amongst the operators and we have had great reviews from guests regarding all the dive companies in town. Some are listed below;

It’s summer in Exmouth. From November to April it is hot.
But what is HOT to you is cool to others. Think of it this way. If you are living in Pannawonica and it is 52 deg outside, then a 45 deg day on the waterfront in Exmouth is bliss!
If you have however just flown in from the south coast of Tasmania then 45 deg days are HOT.
Here is my tip for all holiday makers looking to have the Exmouth Experience in the off season of summer. It’s easily done if you don’t lock yourself in your home and you leave the air conditioning and travel to the reef side of the peninsula. Get out of town and away from the concrete. Get in the water. Come home in the cool of the day, crack a cool drink, use your barbecue not your oven….and wrap that sarong around yourself. You too boys!
I am also happy to negotiate a better deal in summer…so give me a try!

The Ningaloo Reef experience is different for all. Here are some of my most often asked questions regarding what to do in Exmouth and the Ningaloo Reef.
Q. We have small children. What is there for them to do in town?
A. If you are holidaying in summer the town pool is open. There is also a fantastic mini golf set up in the centre of town. Plenty of parks with playgrounds. Always go to the library and check out the activities that may be organised for the school holidays. Small towns like Exmouth have great volunteer groups running a wide variety of projects all year round.
Q. How far is the Ningaloo Reef from my accommodation?
A. Every week I get asked this! Exmouth is not directly on the reef. You will need transport to visit the best reef beaches and dives.
Q. When can I see the Turtles?
A. Turtles are everywhere pretty much all year round. You are best to contact the Conservation and Land Management office in town on Nimitz St and they will provide you with a gallery of photos, brochures and information. My favourite is summer when they are laying their eggs in the sand dunes.

We are getting quite a few interstate and international guests coming to stay in Exmouth at our great holiday houses. Some of the questions they are asking me with regards to the town, the Ningaloo Reef etc… I think I take for granted. So I am going to post the most common questions and answers:
Q. Will I need a car in Exmouth or are there buses that run around? A. You will need a car if you are planning on visiting the Ningaloo Reef and the ranges or gorges. You can however just use the services of the dive companies if you are planning on only going out with these guys. Could work out expensive, but they will pick you up from your door when you are booked with them. There are no bus services that run around. There are however charter buses.
Q. Is the beach walking distance from my accommodation? A. Unless you are staying in one of our Marina or beachfront homes then not really walking distance. In saying that you can easily walk to the beach it is about a 15min walk from the town centre. The town is situated back from the beach due to the occasional cyclone that comes through.
Q. What is the night life like? Are there any clubs or pubs? A. Definitely no clubs, but there are two pubs, The Potshot Tavern and Gracies Tavern. Both do good pub grub, but they are pretty laid back affairs. Nightime socialising is usually on the back verandas of the holiday homes for a quiet bevvy after a big day fishing, diving, snorkeling or lounging on the beach.
Hope that helps.

Once you get into the national park, it is a must to call into the Milyering Visitor Centre. This is especially so if you have children or if you have never been to the area before.
It is 52km from Exmouth and hosts an array of interpretive displays, great theatre screenings of underwater action, and a fabulous library containing information regarding the surrounding marine and national parks. There is also a great gift shop.
At the waters edge in front of the centre are some of the best snorkeling beaches on the coast line. Lakeside is a popular overnight caravan spot, but the shallow beach and snorkeling is unrivalled. Kori Bay and T-Bone Bay are within a kilometer of each other and the turquoise waters are simply breathtaking.
So go the the Milyering Centre then stay for the beaches!

Yesterday as I was walking along the beach at ‘Graveyards Beach’ which is just after Baudin access heading south along the Exmouth Peninsula, I witnessed an amazing sight.
The turtles are in mating season and there must have been about 30 turtles all in the shallows of the surf ‘at it’! It is not a dainty exercise, rather cumbersome and awkward looking. Great to see nature at work.
Further along the beach a very large loggerhead turtle had missed the high tide deadline and was stranded on the sand. It was making a gallant effort to return to the waters and I left it alone. Unsure what to do I will make contact with the local Department of Conservation and Land Management today and get back to you all with the correct procedures for handling a beached turtle.
Sometimes nature just has to run it’s natural course.

It’s a fair drive from Perth to Exmouth. I like to stop along the way for a night and here are some of my favourite spots.
Monkey Mia is only 720 km from Exmouth. Easily done in a day and roughly half way in your journey. There is plenty of accommodation in Denham and those dolphins are still coming ashore every evening for a feed.
Northhampton is just the other side of Geraldton and if you are looking for a ‘quiet’ nights sleep there are some great Bed and Breakfasts in town including one I stay at all the time – The Ostrich Farm.
Kalbarri and the surrounding towns like Port Gregory and Horrocks Beach are great stop off points with caravan parks and chalets all the go in these wonderfull beach front towns.
So there is no need to push yourself to get to your ultimate destination on the Ningaloo Reef. Take your time and smell the roses (or wildflowers!) along the way.

The squid have been prevalent around the marina this last week with reports still coming in from anglers in small dinghies heading out of an afternoon. Blue manner crabs have also shown up in the gulf with the cooler weather. Mullet bait has been working well for the crab pots and frames from fish works well too. The cooler weather should see the whiting anglers return to the town beach of an early morning on the high tide using prawn bait and small long-shank hooks.
Pictured this week is Brett Stevens from minigolf, who was beaming with smiles after catching this giant trevally in the Exmouth Gulf. The fish had some old battle wounds on it that were healing well and after a few quick photos the fish was released. These fish are very hardy and we’ve seen many caught with battle wounds like this one.
The Exmouth Game Fishing Club is hosting the Exmouth Classic in mid June, so if you’re keen to get out and target a few reef species, then grab an entry form from Betta Electrical or one of the local tackle or fuel shops.
The opening of the eatery in the clubhouse is Friday the 4th of June! Nemo’s, as it will be known will be open for lunch Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10-2 and dinner on Friday, Saturday, Sunday from 6-9. For bookings call 9949 4567. Profits go towards the clubhouse and non-profit organisation of EGFC.

Familiar faces are starting to show up around the town as the weather cools down. One such face is that of Owen Suckling who has been coming to Exmouth for many years and staying at the Lighthouse Caravan Park. Despite Owen now needing a walking stick with a back injury in his late 70′s, he is still managing to get down to the water for a fish or two. This week Owen went down to Huntress and caught a 65cm spangled emperor using his favourite rod and reel. He also fed a few charlie court taking his fresh baits.
Golden trevally have been hanging around the weed clusters inside the reef at Tantabiddi. They have also been patrolling the areas near the passages with a few other trevally species in the mix. Soft plastic lures and
poppers work well on these species. If you prefer bait fishing, then anchoring up and berleying can bring in the trevally as they roam the shallows.
Tracey and Chris Speed from Golden Bay have been here for a two week fishing holiday. The couple have been enjoying the sensational autumn weather in their 21ft seafarer. Tracey has been showing Chris up by catching plenty of fish, although Chris tells us that his job is to drive the boat for his wife and for her to catch the fish….yes Chris, we know, your wife has had all the luck this trip! Pictured this week is Chris with one of his catches
during their stay.
The Exmouth Game Fishing Club is hosting the Exmouth Classic on June 11-13th. This is a reef fishing competition for any anglers who simply enjoy getting out and catching a fish for dinner. The competition has
generated some great interest from sponsors and there are 24 flash rods and reels up for grabs, along with loads of other prizes and cash. The event will be run from the new clubhouse and if you want to enter, jump online to www.egfc.com.au or drop in to the local tackle stores or fuel outlets to grab an entry form.
Do you fish from a boat? Have you got your Recreational Fishing from a Boat License yet? It’s important to remember that from 2 March 2010, an RFBL is required to undertake any general fishing activity (including crabbing) conducted with the use of a powered boat anywhere in the State. If you don’t hold an RFBL, you can still go fishing provided you are in the company of someone who holds an RFBL and you stay within that person’s bag limit. If you are unsure about who needs to have a license to do what, then drop in to
the local fisheries on Payne Street to ensure you are not caught out on the
water.

A sighting of two whalesharks off the coastline last weekend has kickstarted the Whaleshark Season off a little early. No one is complaining as this is the highlight of the year for many tourists.
Travelling from waters unknown the gentle giant is present off the Ningaloo Reef coastline from April to June every year. They can often be up to 12m in lenght, with our two first whalesharks reportedly being around 4-5 meters.
May I advise you all to book your whaleshark dives and tours with the operators early as the boats only take so many and we would hate for your to miss out. The Exmouth Visitor Centre will be able to assist www.exmouthwa.com.au
Just a quick reminder that the Whaleshark Festival is on from May 28-30th. There will be lots of activities around town to inform and excite all our guests.
Happy whaleshark spotting!

Give support to the biggest fish in the ocean
