Fishing Report – 11.12.2010

This week is all about the girls out-fishing the boys.  We will start with Marilyn Taylor who was out fishing with partner Stuart Lindfors in the Exmouth Gulf.  The couple headed out from the marina when Stuart managed to
catch a golden trevally on a small baitcaster with 9kg line using a 55g gold twisty. Stuart was feeling rather chuffed.  Then Marilyn hooked up to her first queenfish not far from the marina.  This fish is pictured this week
and is a ripper!  After that, Marilyn landed a Spanish mackerel weighing 15kg off Bundegi: her biggest yet.  Now Stuart wants to know what tips we can give him to stop her outdoing him. We said that it’s better a woman
outdoes a man, than doesn’t let him out!

Following that report was Mitchell Head, who was travelling with his girlfriend Chrissie around Australia.  The two stopped in at Exmouth and fishing from the shore managed to land some awesome queenfish at Old
Bundegi, Learmonth and Wapet creek.  Mitchell reckons he’s got Chrissie hooked for life now, after she out fished him on several occasions. Chrissie was using the Sebile sinking stick shad and could hardly miss a
bite.  She did crush her barbs though, which made for a quick release in the water and the smile on their faces showed that they may be staying a while at this location.

The weather has certainly heated up and if you’re thinking of having a traditional Exmouth Christmas, then now is the time to get in the water and catch a few rock lobster and fresh fish.  The winds have been odd lately
with some northerlies and humidity about, but if you can’t get out and get some fish, then thankfully Kailis are open this year, so there should be plenty of seafood about for the hot summer festive season.

All the staff at Bluewater Tackle World Exmouth, who bring you this report each week, would like to wish everyone a happy and safe festive season. We thank you for your reports and support and look forward to seeing you all again.  Remember that we will be drawing our fishing competition prize on Christmas eve thanks to Shimano. If you haven’t entered, you’d better get in quick!

Fishing Report – 15.05.2010

Familiar faces are starting to show up around the town as the weather cools down.  One such face is that of Owen Suckling who has been coming to Exmouth for many years and staying at the Lighthouse Caravan Park. Despite Owen now needing a walking stick with a back injury in his late 70′s, he is still managing to get down to the water for a fish or two. This week Owen went down to Huntress and caught a 65cm spangled emperor using his favourite rod and reel.  He also fed a few charlie court taking his fresh baits.
Golden trevally  have been hanging around the weed clusters inside the reef at Tantabiddi.  They have also been patrolling the areas near the passages with a few other trevally species in the mix.  Soft plastic lures and
poppers work well on these species.  If you prefer bait fishing, then anchoring up and berleying can bring in the trevally as they roam the shallows.

Tracey and Chris Speed from Golden Bay have been here for a two week fishing holiday.  The couple have been enjoying the sensational autumn weather in their 21ft seafarer.  Tracey has been showing Chris up by catching plenty of fish, although Chris tells us that his job is to drive the boat for his wife and for her to catch the fish….yes Chris, we know, your wife has had all the luck this trip! Pictured this week is Chris with one of his catches
during their stay.
The Exmouth Game Fishing Club is hosting the Exmouth Classic on June 11-13th.  This is a reef fishing competition for any anglers who simply enjoy getting out and catching a fish for dinner.  The competition has
generated some great interest from sponsors and there are 24 flash rods and reels up for grabs, along with loads of other prizes and cash.  The event will be run from the new clubhouse and if you want to enter, jump online to www.egfc.com.au or drop in to the local tackle stores or fuel outlets to grab an entry form.
Do you fish from a boat? Have you got your Recreational Fishing from a Boat License yet? It’s important to remember that from 2 March 2010, an RFBL is required to undertake any general fishing activity (including crabbing) conducted with the use of a powered boat anywhere in the State. If you don’t hold an RFBL, you can still go fishing provided you are in the company of someone who holds an RFBL and you stay within that person’s bag limit.  If you are unsure about who needs to have a license to do what, then drop in to
the local fisheries on Payne Street to ensure you are not caught out on the
water.

Coral Bay or Exmouth?

Lately I have had conversations with potential guests enquiring as to whether they should base their Ningaloo Reef holiday experience in either Coral Bay or Exmouth. Two trains of thought here.

Yes Coral bay is gorgeous, and the reef is ‘just there’. Its a one street town and with that comes all the charm of a small remote community, on a glorious beach, in the best state in Australia.

But, because it is so small, there is little to no accommodation available. Only the very organised, booking many years in some cases for prime spots, have the opportunity to stay in Coral Bays’ very limited accommodation.

So if you are hell bent of basing your reef exploration in Coral Bay then BOOK EARLY, very early.

However, Exmouth may be another 150km away, but with a little less forward planning, you can find accommodation relatively easily. Obviously peak periods sell quickly, you may need to think ahead 6 months. But the choice is far greater than in Coral Bay.

You can also get to the reef very easily from Tantabiddi (38km from town) or Bundegi ( 13km from town) via the boat ramps.

Choice is everything. But planning your holiday often years in advance can prove tricky!

Fishing Report 20.08.09

Sorry for the lack of fishing reports lately, but the flu got me a beauty
and after about two weeks feeling dreadful, I finally decided to get some
fishing therapy, get out on the water and leave my sickness behind.  It
worked!  I’m now much better and ready to fill you in on what the staff have
had reported in the last week.
Lindsay Toop from Perth has been having some fun up here on his month-long
holiday. He’s been catching north-west snapper and bream from the marina
using pilchard and squid baits with no sinker.

Travellers Judy and Brad Cole came in to town for a few days with their caravan in tow.  They were
hoping to stay and try for a fresh feed of fish in Exmouth.  They were
surprised to find that all the parks were full and even the overflow was
quite full.  They did manage to stay for a couple of days and got out to
catch their first fish on their trip from Adelaide to Darwin, then Broome
and here.  They were very pleased with a fresh feed of whiting off the beach
and bream that they caught using small segments of prawn and light gear.

There are Mack Tuna to 6kg in the gulf at present according to angler Brad
Bell.  Brad’s been getting amongst the fishing spots while the weather has
been so sensational over the last few weeks.  He also managed to get out to
the 100m mark and get into some red emperor, cod and long-finned snapper.
All of these fish were great eating and the day on the water was well
enjoyed by all onboard.

Mudcrabs have been prevalent in the gulf, along with the blue swimmer crabs.
Please remember to have the correct license for any netting in our area, as
fisheries have informed me that some people have been unaware of the rules
and regulations.

Spanish Mackerel time

The Spanish mackerel have been coming in thick on the Tantabiddi side of the
cape while the wahoo have also been out in this area.  From the shoreline
the bluebone have started to come in numbers along the access roads and a
good pair of polarised sunglasses will help you see the blue beauties in the
shallows.
