How to beat the heat in Exmouth.

Ok, so we are now in the swing of summer. Here are my tips for you.

  • make it part of your habit. Do not leave the house without a water bottle and sip water regularly all day. You will sweat much more than usual and wont even notice it.
  • It obvious, but put a hat on as soon as you walk out the door, apart from the obvious sun implications, you will dehydrate from your scalp and you need to keep this as cool as possible.
  • Ankles swelling? Raise them at night, eat less salty foods, drink less alcohol and go for a walk in the ocean.
  • Eat foods high in water content like watermelon and salads.
  • If it is very hot in town, it will be much cooler on the other side of the peninsula. Head out of town and hit the beach.
  • Get in the water and cool down. Pack water, pack a hat, pack sunscreen, put on a rashie, set up a sunshade, get into the water. Cool your body temperature down immediately.
  • All too hard? The town pool is always there for a quick dip. Or even getting wet at any one of the Gulf beaches will do the trick, the water is much warmer than the beaches on the other side, but you are at least wet!
  • Use your airconditioners wisely. They are very efficient and will cool down the house quickly. I beg you not to leave them on all day and go out. It’s a waste of power and money and completely unnecessary. All it will do is raise the tariffs for next time as the owners get their power bills.  Please consider this.

Fishing Report Easter 2011

Nice big Ruby Jobbie

What a busy town Exmouth has been over the Easter break.  There was not one room in any accommodation place available, nor were there even empty camp sites! As you can imagine the boat ramps and beaches were flat out too as the weather was ‘picture-perfect.’

At town beach before sunrise there have been schools of baitfish getting harassed by predatory species such as trevally and small queenfish.  It is spectacular to watch and so is the sunrise! This coming week is good tides to be there and target the whiting, so make sure you have some prawn bait ready along with some small long shank hooks and a bit of berley for the whiting at dawn.

The fishing was a little slow over the Easter break.  The full moon, biggest tides of the year and super-moon phase may have had something to do with it all. However, there were still reports late in the long weekend of mackerel, ranking, reds, and billfish by different anglers.

One tasty delight this week has been the run of yellow fin tuna off the cape.  There have been several reports of large yellow fin in schools off the Muiron Island’s and the tip of the cape.  The weed has been rather thick of late and trolling lures has been challenging, however, there has been some fish amongst it all.

Suze Gerovich and Taygen Dray were residents of Exmouth, working here at Bluewater Tackle for the last year.  They, like so many others, stopped in Exmouth on a trip around Australia and ‘got stuck’. They have finally moved on with their travels, but will be back in around twelve months to settle in Exmouth.  Before their departure they had a few days off around the west side chasing fish in the shallows, ruby’s out wide and billfish.  The ruby fishing was sensational and pictured this week is Taygen with his first catch of ruby in deep water.

Some new homes joining us soon.

Our holiday home portfolio is ever changing and we sadly farewell Frangipani and Ocean Breeze.

Frangipani is on the market for sale and she is a little ripper of a house. She may be only one bedroom but she has plenty of space and if you are looking for a nice investment check out www.exmouthrealestate.com.au and ask for Leiza.

Ocean Breeze’s owners are ‘living the dream’ and they are moving to town in late May, we are very happy for them if not a little jealous!

But fear not as we will have some more properties to offer you very soon so watch this space! One home will even be ready for bookings in July…our only home still available for the July School Holidays.

Book now!

Whaleshark Swim Bookings

If you are coming to Exmouth during the Whaleshark season, April – September every year, you would be wise to think about your bookings now.

This is a spectacular event, and every year guests book accommodation with us, sometimes 10 months in advance, just to have the opportunity to swim with these gentle giants of the oceans.

However they fail to book their dives until they actually arrive into town, or only weeks prior. May I suggest that you plan your swim and dive as soon as you can. Do the research with the Whaleshark operators and get the best price and product for your needs.

There are no ‘duds’ amongst the operators and we have had great reviews from guests regarding all the dive companies in town. Some are listed below;

Ningaloo Whaleshark n Dive – www.ningaloowhalesharkndive.com.au

Ningaloo Blue – www.ningalooblue.com.au

Ningaloo Reef Dreaming – www.ningaloodreaming.com

Three Islands Marine Charters – www.whalesharkdive.com

Back to Basics on Exmouth info

We are getting quite a few interstate and international guests coming to stay in Exmouth at our great holiday houses. Some of the questions they are asking me with regards to the town, the Ningaloo Reef etc… I think I take for granted. So I am going to post the most common questions and answers:

Q. Will I need a car in Exmouth or are there buses that run around? A. You will need a car if you are planning on visiting the Ningaloo Reef and the ranges or gorges. You can however just use the services of the dive companies if you are planning on only going out with these guys. Could work out expensive, but they will pick you up from your door when you are booked with them. There are no bus services that run around. There are however charter buses.

Q. Is the beach walking distance from my accommodation? A. Unless you are staying in one of our Marina or beachfront homes then not really walking distance. In saying that you can easily walk to the beach it is about a 15min walk from the town centre. The town is situated back from the beach due to the occasional cyclone that comes through.

Q. What is the night life like? Are there any clubs or pubs? A. Definitely no clubs, but there are two pubs, The Potshot Tavern and Gracies Tavern. Both do good pub grub, but they are pretty laid back affairs. Nightime socialising is usually on the back verandas of the holiday homes for a quiet bevvy after a big day fishing, diving, snorkeling or lounging on the beach.

Hope that helps.

Coral Bay or Exmouth?

Lately I have had conversations with potential guests enquiring as to whether they should base their Ningaloo Reef holiday experience in either Coral Bay or Exmouth. Two trains of thought here.

Yes Coral bay is gorgeous, and the reef is ‘just there’. Its a one street town and with that comes all the charm of a small remote community, on a glorious beach, in the best state in Australia.

But, because it is so small, there is little to no accommodation available. Only the very organised, booking many years in some cases for prime spots, have the opportunity to stay in Coral Bays’ very limited accommodation.

So if you are hell bent of basing your reef exploration in Coral Bay then BOOK EARLY, very early.

However, Exmouth may be another 150km away, but with a little less forward planning, you can find accommodation relatively easily. Obviously peak periods sell quickly, you may need to think ahead 6 months. But the choice is far greater than in Coral Bay.

You can also get to the reef very easily from Tantabiddi (38km from town) or Bundegi ( 13km from town) via the boat ramps.

Choice is everything. But planning your holiday often years in advance can prove tricky!

Great Holiday Planner

I have discovered the most fantastic website holiday planner. Full of local information and more website links than you can poke a stick at.

For all our interstate and international guests, I strongly urge you to check out www.touristradio.com.au

When you are driving around this fair state of ours, you will see tourist radio signs posted along the road advertising the radio station to tune to. It will give you all the local ‘what to do’ information.

So no matter where you are travelling to in this great state, make sure you check out the website before you head off and tune into the radio whilst you are driving around.
